Greyhound Rescue Wales is the leading independent all Wales greyhound and lurcher rescue and rehoming charity. Over the last five years the charity has expanded, becoming a company limited by guarantee and seeing its turnover grow from £40,000 to approaching £400,000 per year as we took on our own rehoming centre, opened several charity shops and began employing staff.
This kind of growth has meant some serious re-thinking about our accounting systems! And, as is common with charities, the people administering the accounting are volunteers and usually enthusiastic but unskilled in areas they take on. So that’s me, the Treasurer, described!
In 2017-2018 we wanted to begin using QuickBooks online instead of a complex series of Excel spreadsheets. In truth we had no idea how to start with QBO and you can only watch so many generic videos – so we needed help.
Enter stage left (right and centre) Elaine Dollimore of Inspired Back Office. Elaine not only had all the skills and knowledge required to dig us out of the hole we managed to slither into, but loves and has adopted many greyhounds. She set up our QBO chart of accounts for us based on our old Excel spreadsheets and gave us enough advice to get us going. We quickly got ourselves into a mess and Elaine had to step in and sort out our methods, processes, data, VAT and reconciliations. Nearly six months of “garbage in- garbage out” needed unpicking…. Oops. But she did unpick it all and knit it back together and then set us more firmly on the correct path.
We are still a ‘work in progress’ for our mentor and she now even worries if we don’t get in touch with a problem or needing advice.
Elaine has become a true friend of GRW and without her expertise and devotion to the cause (greyhounds and human idiots) I know that we would be in deep, deep accounting trouble.
She is skilled, patient and knowledgeable in both bookkeeping and QBO. I can recommend her services without reservation to any small to medium business or organisation.
